Nuevo año, nuevo yo

2025

Nuevo año, nueva yo, translates to “new year, new you” a phrase that sends shivers down my spine.

New year’s resolutions have always given me the creeps. I created this piece to escape the extreme emotions of my brothers seventh year of passing. It feels like yesterday, really, that I looked him in the face and said “I love you, I can’t wait to see how we grow together.”

He passed on December 21, 2017 and his birthday is on January 2nd. The two weeks during the holidays have always been a slight more hellish for me than the average.

Like Dolls in Space, I am using the illustrious Tom Tierney’s paper dolls, however; this time I am exploring themes of grief, joy, and new beginnings.

Paper dolls were a seminal part of my play as a child. This work tells the story of a young girl who dreams of a warmer climate and is stuck in between unpleasant feelings. Longing to get outside, she finds herself trapped in a castle in the sky.
